🍫 Chocolate Cake Recipe

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
  • ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240ml) boiling water or hot coffee (enhances chocolate flavor)

For the Chocolate Frosting:

  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups (440g) powdered sugar
  • ½ cup (45g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup (60ml) heavy cream or milk (adjust for desired consistency)


Instructions

Make the Cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans (or line with parchment paper).
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in the boiling water (batter will be thin – that’s okay!).
  5. Divide batter evenly between the pans.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool for 10 minutes in the pans, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Make the Frosting:

  1. Beat butter until creamy.
  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, cocoa, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Add vanilla and cream. Beat on high speed for 2–3 minutes until fluffy. Adjust with more cream or sugar for desired consistency.


Assemble the Cake:

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate.
  2. Spread with frosting.
  3. Top with second layer and frost the top and sides.
  4. Decorate as desired (chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fresh berries work great!).
