🥧 Classic Apple Pie Recipe
Ingredients
For the Pie Crust (or use 1 pre-made double crust):
- 2 ½ cups (315g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
- 6–8 tbsp ice water
For the Apple Filling:
- 6–8 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
- ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
- ¼ cup (50g) brown sugar
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp butter, cut into small pieces
For the Top:
- 1 egg (beaten with 1 tbsp water, for egg wash)
- Extra sugar for sprinkling (optional)
Instructions
1. Make the Pie Crust (if homemade):
- In a large bowl, whisk flour, salt, and sugar.
- Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add ice water a tablespoon at a time until dough comes together.
- Divide in half, shape into disks, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.
2. Prepare the Apple Filling:
- In a large bowl, combine apple slices with sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and vanilla.
- Toss well and let sit for 15 minutes to develop flavor.
3. Assemble the Pie:
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Roll out one dough disk into a 12-inch circle. Fit into a 9-inch pie dish.
- Fill with apple mixture and dot with butter.
- Roll out the second disk and place over filling. Seal and crimp the edges. Cut slits for steam or create a lattice top.
- Brush top with egg wash and sprinkle with sugar if desired.
4. Bake the Pie:
- Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 20 minutes.
- Reduce oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 35–45 more minutes, until crust is golden and filling is bubbling.
- Cover edges with foil if browning too quickly.
5. Cool and Serve:
- Let pie cool for at least 2 hours before slicing.
- Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
🍏 Tips:
- Mix tart and sweet apples for balanced flavor.
- Chill pie before baking to keep crust flaky.
- Reheat slices in the oven to keep them crisp.
